Security risk assessments and audits

Security risk assessments and audits as performed by IBIS are based on analysis of security-related threats against premises and individuals.  Since this analysis is the starting point of the security risk evaluation process, it also includes an examination of crime-related incidents in order to determine trends and patterns.  Apart from the threat analysis, the approach includes analysing processes followed in the particular company or business concern to determine the security input on each activity.  The rationale is that crime occurs because of deficiencies in operational processes, security procedures and practices, which are exploited by the culprits, be it own personnel or outsiders.  Security should therefore be designed to prevent, or at least minimise, a reoccurrence of these incidents.

It is the view that the effectiveness of the way in which security is practised could normally be enhanced by revising current security policy and procedures, without a considerable capital layout.  Determining appropriate security guidelines is based on the analysis process referred to above.  In more detail it entails considering threats from the environment that could have an impact on the institution’s activity profile and the occurrence of, or potential for internal security threats, that is where own personnel contribute to adverse security incidents.  This initial phase in the risk analysis should be researched-based, and in many instances the information used for this process is available within the institution itself.  Following this phase, in combination with the result of the crime analysis referred to, a vulnerability profile of the institution is compiled where high-risk and lower-risk areas (regarding security-related threats and the activity profile) are identified and described.  Security measures should be designed and applied in accordance with this vulnerability profile, ensuring efficiency, appropriateness and financial viability.

Services available

Since risk analysis is based on research of the factual situation and all documentation that relates to the conduct of security in the particular institution is examined, the outcome appears to be more realistic and cost-effective for the client.  Obviously, a physical inspection of the premises, current security procedures and hardware/technology, referred to as a security survey in the industry, is included in the risk analysis process.  Recommendations normally include the full spectrum of security practice, from guidelines on the approach to be followed in managing security-related risks to the protection of assets, personnel and information of a proprietary nature.  Services relating to the risk-analysis environment which are rendered by IBIS, include the following:

  • Analysis of security threats and determination of the vulnerability profile (of the premises, its activities, information and personnel).
  • Revision, design and preparation of security policies and regulations.
  • Security surveys.
  • Development and maintenance of loss-control programmes.
  • Development and management of security-awareness programmes.
  • Security-related investigations.
  • Research on security-relevant issues.
